Research Notes on the Northern Illawarra Floyd Family

Under Construction

The Floyd,  family of Bulli – Woonona – Helensburgh, were known as Publicans of Woonona, Bulli & Helensburgh from 1862. Members of the family also became Butchers in Bulli, Woonona and Thirroul.

The family were known to own property in Old Bulli, around Bulli Beach and Farrell Road Bulli, while some also lived in Woonona and Helensburgh.

In 1869 John Floyd bought 1869 -1 Purchase record - Land Titles

John Floyd opened the Railway Hotel opposite Hobart St Bulli beside the Bulli Coal Company’s tram line – which ran through the village to the jetty on  Bulli (now Sandon) Point – in 1870 – see Thematic History of the City of Wollongong – FINAL REPORT. The Railway Hotel, wa also dubbed the Miners Arms, and was the first inn to be licensed in Old Bulli with the first licensee being John Floyd, followed by Phil Dwyer, Patrick d’Arcy and Laurence d’Arcy, before its closure in 1913. Reliant on the coaching traffic like the Denmark Hotel, the Railway Hotel trade had also been impacted by the completion of the Railway from Sydney through to Kiama and competition from George Croft’s hotel in New Bulli. It became a boarding house also. Bulli Heritage Trail.

Bulli – Floyd’s Point, by which name Waniora Point was known, was used for sports meetings but in April 1886 Bulli public park was taken in trust by Archibald Campbell of Wollongong as trustee. After successful efforts by H.S. Fry 25 acres between the railway station and the sea, of which Farrell had been the lessee, were purchased from G. Croft at £45 per acre for public purposes. Croft gave the land for the extension of Park Road to the seaside at Trinity Row…. The Bulli Rifle Club was formed in May 1889 and soon had 40 members . The club sought the rifle range but George Adams refused to allow the use of the old range when he took over. Floyd asked too much for the land near Floyd’s Point (Waniora Point) and a site at Bellambi was considered too far away. The range closed in 1900 but was eventually reopened … The Bulli baths at Floyd’s Rocks were built in 1903, certain hours being set aside for ladies and others for gentlemen in the early years. – Black Diamonds

Land in that area remained in the family until at least 1900 – with lots advertised in a subdivision for sale there in September 1900, this followed the passing of Rose Floyd nee Griffin, widow of John Floyd. Plan below is from 23.6.1900 – Charles Morton, C.E. Surveyor

Capture

August 1900Mr. H. F. Cotterell reports having conducted a very successful sale in connection with the Floyd estate on Tuesday, when the household furniture and effects and cattle were disposed of. Prices obtained for the last named were as follows : Springers at £6 7s 6d, £3 15s, £4 10s, £2 17s 6d, £6 5s each ; two heifers, £4 2s ; milker, £1 78. Poultry fetched 2s lid jier pair, while the family piano realised £40. The farm was divided and lots drawn by the family for the various

blocks.
August 1900 – The Floyd Estate has been duly divided among the members of the family in a way unusual, but which leaves no ground for grumbling. The land was divided into six portions, and on Monday evening lots were drawn for them. Mr. Jas. Floyd, Helensburgh,
got the house with 4 1/2 acres, and will live there.

In 1912 Peter Floyd sought Indefeasible Title to Land in Bulli:

However he passed away, soon after in 1913 – his farmhouse was located at what is now 76 Farrell Road.
Mick Roberts wrote in 2014: Peter Floyd … inherited 20 acres of land fronting Bulli beach, stretching westward to the South Coast railway, between Owen Street and Farrell Road, north to Bulli Park. His farm house sat on the hill, off the northern side, at 76 Farrell Road. … Just months before his death at the young age of 47 on April 17 1913, Peter donated three acres or 1.2ha of land fronting the beach to Bulli Shire Council for public recreation. It wasn’t Peter’s first donation to the Shire, with the wealthy bachelor giving land for a road on the eastern boundary of his property to access the Bulli sea baths.”
After Peter Floyd’s  passing in April 1913, his land was subdivided into 8 lots and auctioned by H Cotterell.

In the mid 1990’s there were still many charming weatherboard properties in the south western area of Farrell Rd Bulli, around 87 –  91 Farrell Rd and to the east, viz in the vicinity of Bulli Workers Club. These old weatherboard properties had been colourfully painted.  However sadly some of these were lost with the resumptions associated with the construction of the Northern Distributor – Memorial Drive.

In 2023, our Museum received inquiries about properties in the vicinity of 92 – 96 Farrell Road Bulli, Franklin Avenue,  Thompson Street, and Rixon Avenue.
